ZEST awakens the “researcher gene” during Researchers’ Night 2025

European Researchers’ Night 2025

The partner the Latvian State Institute of Wood Chemistry (LSIWC) brought science and innovation closer to citizens during the event held across more than thirty locations in Riga (Latvia), including the institute’s own facilities.

With the participation of the Latvian State Institute of Wood Chemistry (LSIWC), the European project ZEST joined Researchers’ Night 2025, held on 26 September simultaneously in over thirty venues across Riga.

Under the motto “Discover the Researcher Gene in You!”, the initiative aimed to take science out of the labs and into people’s lives, helping citizens understand how research impacts their daily routines and what topics currently drive scientists’ work.

Throughout the event, visitors had the opportunity to visit LSIWC’s facilities and learn more about European projects such as ZEST, which explores new alternative proteins derived from fungal fermentation of agricultural residues, fostering a more sustainable food system and circular bioeconomy in Europe.

In Latvia, the event forms part of the broader European celebration of science, coordinated by the Ministry of Education and Science in collaboration with research institutes, universities, schools, and innovation centres.

Where science meets daily life

One of the goals of the consortium behind ZEST, which brings together twelve entities from five European countries, is precisely to inform and raise awareness among citizens who are not familiar with the project’s mission, helping them understand the importance of collective action to drive the green transition.
