From the lab to the bar: ZEST steps into Riga’s streets

Latvian State Institute of Wood Chemistry

Project partner the Latvian State Institute of Wood Chemistry joined the Latvian Council of Science campaign to bring research closer to citizens.

The ZEST project was featured in a gallery inspired by Science Street — an open-air exhibition created within the campaign Science and Your Life: Notice and Understand!, led by the Latvian Council of Science. While Science Street showcased projects funded by the Council, the gallery highlighted several current research initiatives at the Latvian State Institute of Wood Chemistry (LSIWC), including ZEST, in which LSIWC plays a partner role.

The mini exhibition was hosted at the beer bar Kaķis Maisā, run by one of LSIWC’s researchers, a creative choice that brought science out of the lab and into everyday spaces, inviting the public to engage with research in an informal and relatable way.

Science in motion: ZEST sparks curiosity across Europe

The activity was part of a broader effort by the ZEST consortium to bring science to the streets and foster public engagement with sustainable innovation. While the work of scientists often goes unseen, it plays a vital role in shaping our daily lives: from developing new technologies that improve work efficiency, to enhancing safety, health, education, and environmental sustainability.

Through initiatives like this, ZEST continues to highlight how scientific collaboration can inspire curiosity, connection, and change in communities across Europe.
