ZEST partners meet for an internal workshop on SSbD approaches

SSbD workshop

The online event was led by LEITAT, coordinator of Work Package 6 — Safety and Sustainability Assessment

The partners of the ZEST project recently held an online workshop under Work Package 6, led by the work package coordinator LEITAT. This work package focuses on operationalising sets of criteria for Safety-and-Sustainability-by-Design (SSbD) assessment. The overarching goal is to guide all relevant processes towards minimising risks to human health and the environment, while simultaneously maximising the positive impact of food additives.

Within ZEST, SSbD is conceived not merely as a compliance tool but as a proactive framework that embeds safety, sustainability, and innovation from the earliest stages of research and development. This approach involves anticipating potential hazards, accounting for life-cycle impacts, and integrating eco-innovation principles into every design decision. By applying SSbD, the project aims to ensure that new food additives are developed responsibly—reducing uncertainties, strengthening consumer trust, and contributing to the transition towards a more sustainable food system.
