LEITAT presents ZEST’s Safe-and-Sustainable-by-Design methodology at Europe’s leading forum on responsible innovation in materials and processes.
As leader of Work Package 6, LEITAT presented the methodology and objectives of the ZEST project in applying the Safe-and-Sustainable-by-Design (SSbD) framework during the SSbD25 Conference, held in Zurich, Switzerland.

Organised by the IRISS SSbD Community and hosted at the Empa-Akademie with the support of the European Commission, the conference brings together representatives from science, industry and policy to exchange insights on the practical implementation of the SSbD approach. The event aims to strengthen cross-sector collaboration, promote responsible innovation aligned with the European Green Deal, and advance the development of tools and metrics for designing safer and more sustainable materials and products.
From food side streams to safe and sustainable ingredients
ZEST’s participation highlighted its commitment to integrating safety and sustainability principles throughout the value chain of ingredients extracted from food side streams. Within Work Package 6, the project applies the European Commission’s SSbD framework to ensure that new food and cosmetic ingredients are not only safe for human health but also environmentally and socio-economically sustainable compared to conventional materials.
